ZTE to build electric cars in China
ZTE, the Chinese mobile phone manufacturer and telecommunications giant, will start building electric cars this year.
Last July, the company already acquired Zhuhai Guangtong Automobile, a manufacturer of electric buses with exports to Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Australia, among other countries. The experience gathered via this acquisition will serve as springboard for the elecric-car initiative.
According to ZTE, an R&D centre is to be established in the city of Zhuhai, and production started before the end of the year.
ZTE has some automotive experience via its provision of connectivity services, wireless charging systems and autonomous driving technology for other manufacturers. It aims to sell about five million units by 2020.
