VW partners with Chinese AI start-up Mobvoi

German car manufacturing group Volkswagen will be investing $180 million in Google-backed Chinese Artificial Intelligence start-up Mobvoi, reports Automotive News China. Mobvoi was created in 2012 by a team of ex Google employees and will be developing voice-recognition and natural language processing technology for Volkswagen models and possibly other brands.

Apart from Google and Volkswagen, other investors in the start-up are venture capital firms Sequoia and ZhenFund. Last year, Mobvoi was appointed official partner to Google’s Android Wear software, meaning its voice-search services are embedded in Google’s wearable devices’ operating sysem. At the same time, the start-up started selling its second-generation smartwatch device in the U.S.A.
