Russia bouncing back
Figures from the Association of European Businesses in Russia (AEB) show that new car sales in the country rose by 9.4% in March, to a total of just under 138,000. The recovery in this market, which has seen catastrophic declines over the past few years, seems to be confirmed, as the March figures take the first quarter total to around 322,500 – up by a small but welcome 1% on the first quarter of last year. Indeed, as pointed out by AEB chairman Joerg Schreiber, it is more than four years since an increase was seen in any quarter.
Where brands are concerned, local favourite and Renault partner Lada rose 13% during the month. Second placed Kia fared even better, up by 18%, sister brand Hyundai (3rd) was up by a full 29%, 4th 0and 5th and placed Renault and Toyota also recorded substantial gains – 19% and 18% respectively.
