Opel continues EV and SUV plans under PSA

Opel/Vauxhall may soon change hands from GM to PSA, but the manufacturer will maintain its current strategy within the new group – including plans for more EVs and a flagship SUV, writes Automotive News Europe, based on an interview in German media Auto Motor & Sport.

Karl-Thomas Neumann, CEO of the German-British carmaker, said it would continue to have its own leadership and car design and development teams – even if those cars in future will be underpinned by PSA platforms rather than GM ones.

Mr. Neumann, pictured, speaking to a German motoring magazine, declined to comment on rumours that he had been planning to turn Opel into a pure-electric brand before General Motors decided to sell it. However, he did confirm that Opel would continue to plan more EVs after the Ampera-e, the sister to the Chevrolet Bolt.

Opel would also be allowed to sell future models of the Ampera-e, Neumann clarified. Opel will also continue with its plan to launch new SUV as its second flagship model alongside the Insignia midsize sedan.

In all, Opel will launch seven new models as part of its biggest product offensive ever. That offensive will be focused on Europe: Neumann said he did not see China as the cure-all to solve the carmaker's problems.
