Nissan sells battery business to Chinese

Nissan, the largest producer of electric vehicles in the world, will be selling off its lithium ion battery production activities to a Chinese investor, GSR Capital. The OEM is doing away with non-core business to reserve its resources for R&D in electric powertrains and autonomous driving, reports Automotive News.

The sale includes sites in the US, the UK and Japan. The Chinese investment company reckons the creation of an independent battery manufacturer to supply different automakers makes sense. It might move some of the manufacturing to China.

The move goes against other carmakers’battery strategy like Daimler and Tesla, who are investing in proprietary lithium ion battery plants. Volkswagen, too, is considering creating its own cell manufacturing unit.
