Autonomous VWs to ‘see’ via crowdsourcing

Israeli automotive safety equipment company Mobileye will be supplying Volkswagen with its Road Experience Management mapping service as from 2018. This service crowdsources real-time road condition reports from vehicles to provide intelligent fleet features for use in self-driving cars.

The frontal cameras of cars equipped with REM send info from their frontal cameras to the cloud. From there, the gathered information is used to create HD ‘real life’ navigation maps. The cooperation between VW and Mobileye is a first step in extending the REM platform across the industry.

Map building would vastly benefit from crowdsourcing data from cars of various carmakers, which in turn would benefit from improved autonomous driving capability.
